Custom timber components for the museum conversion

As part of the conversion of the listed building into the Reutlingen City Museum, we supplied 182 uniquely designed timber components made from BauBuche. These concealed connecting elements – known as “Knaggen” – are critical structural details: at every junction, a custom-made Knagge ensures stability and even load distribution.

The components were produced in 82 different variants – each individually programmed and milled. In some cases, we used a CAD routine to automatically derive similar shapes. Working closely with the planning team, we optimised the data structure to enable a smooth CNC process – despite the high level of complexity.

The project illustrates how digital manufacturing, close coordination and absolute precision can come together – even when dealing with highly individualised parts.

A striking example of the interplay between engineering and design can be seen in the building envelope: both roof and façade were clad in glazed ceramic tiles – an architectural statement down to the last detail.

BauBuche offers ideal properties for this kind of task: high strength, dimensional accuracy and a clean, modern aesthetic – a material that combines load-bearing performance with design quality.
